Glow Worm HXi
12HXi, 15HXi, 18HXi, 24HXi, 30HXi
Quite a neat little boiler on the face of it, cheap and popular. But I don't
like them (you guessed that from my first sentence didn't you? ;-) )
Uses the same heat exchanger as the most excellent Vaillant EcoMAX, but there
the similarity ends. The HXi seems terribly prone to nuisance overheat
thermostat tripping. And pre-mix fan failure. And control board failure.
Everything else on it is great. Almost.
I'll expand. The programming, or rather the fault reporting, on the HXi is
the big reason I don't like this boiler. The error codes are flaky to say the
least. This boiler will report error codes that aren't in the Manufacturer's
Instructions, or will report that the boiler is working correctly when it is
plain stone cold and refusing to start. Fan failure for example. I had this a
while ago and Glow Worm tech support said it will be either the fan or the
control board. A new control board (£170) made no difference, so I bought a new
fan as well (£190).... That fixed it but I couldn't bill the client for both as
his old control board was fine when I re-fitted it, grrrrrr.....
Not funny really, as it also wasted a LOAD of my time that I felt unable to
bill the customer for either.
I HATE this boiler actually... (Ok, a bit strong, but I really
don't LIKE it.)
Here are some more of it's problems:
1) Original burner door gasket needs replacement if disturbed for safety
reasons. Has to be disturbed to service the boiler.
2) Condensate trap tends to leak inside the boiler causing corrosion of the
case. A safety hazard.
3) Condensate trap cleaning cap underneath the boiler tends to fail to seal
as thread doesn't fit properly. Has to be bodged with silicone, or better, a new
trap and cap ordered, and fitted on a return visit. Infuriating.
Pleas don't call and ask me to service yours.
But maybe I'm being unfair. Email and tell me if you are pleased with yours
;-)
