Potterton Kingfisher CAT 1N boilers:

Despite sharing the name “Kingfisher” with the domestic Kingfisher series of boilers discussed on my main Kingfisher page, the Potterton Kingfisher CAT 1N boilers have very little in common with the domestic Kingfisher.

The CAT 1N boilers have sectional heat exchangers and are basically commercial gas boilers requiring a commercially qualified gas fitter to work on them. The smallest in the range is actually below the size threshold which makes a commercial gas fitter mandatory, but most I encounter are above the threshold.

The threshold is 70.0kW heat input. If the data label on the boiler states a heat input value of more than 70.0kW, then a commercial gas fitter is mandatory and I don’t hold commercial qualifications so I’m not permitted to work on these.

The Kingfisher CAT 1N boilers are like a huge version of the normal domestic Kingfisher and Kingfisher 2 boilers, designed for heating very large houses, offices and commercial buildings. They are very old-fashioned boilers and fuel efficiency is poor by today’s standards. The sectional heat exchangers can be dismantled into several pieces to assist in moving them around, and the gas control valves are larger than domestic boilers, and the gas valves are sadly obsolete.

My best advice if you have a Kingfisher CAT 1N is to contact some commercial gas engineers and see if any will work on it. Most I suspect will probably recommend replacing a Kingfisher CAT 1N with a modern, fuel-efficient condensing boiler though.
